Pioneering Female Commercial Airline Pilot, Captain Karen Kahn, Addresses Pilot Shortage With the Release of New Book: "Flight Guide for Success: Tips & Tactics for the Aspiring Airline Pilot 20080601064843
<p>SANTA BARBARA, CA--(Marketwire - May 31, 2008) - For most Americans, rising fuel costs have almost exclusively focused our attention on the airline industry only in terms of decreased service and higher prices. It's easy to forget how quickly the airplane progressed from an eccentric fantasy of aviation pioneers to the ubiquitous mode of public transportation it's become today. All of this growth, however, has fueled its own crises: a projected pilot shortage. <p> According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), it's estimated the airline industry may need as many as 17,000 new pilots annually due to expected industry growth and attrition. The IATA states that increasing the retirement age to 65 will help the shortage, but it can't be the only solution.<br /> [in <a href=http://www.newsisfree.com/sources/info/4903/><b>MarketWire: Travel and Hospitality</b></a>]

Airline profit guidance lowered again 20080401074046
The slowing U.S. economy and surging jet fuel prices have forced an international trade group to lower its outlook on airline profits for the second time in four months, with domestic carriers expected to take the biggest earnings hit.<p/>The International Air Transport Association on Tuesday said it expects profits for domestic and foreign carriers to fall to $4.5 billion this year from $5.6 billion in 2007. IATA in December lowered its forecast to $5 billion from a previous estimate of $7.8 billion, due to higher oil prices and credit-market turmoil.<p/>U.S. airlines' profits are expected to fall to $1.8 billion from an estimated $2.8 billion last year. "This could easily turn into a net loss should the current economic environment deteriorate further," according to IATA.<p/>"The offset to rising oil prices during 2004-2007 provided by rising U.S. consumer confidence and travel demand has come to an abrupt end in 2008," the trade group said in a release.<p/>Jet-fuel prices in New York hit a record high near $3.50 a gallon in mid-March, almost double the year-ago price of about $1.85, according to the Energy Department. Fuel costs have become the airline industry's biggest expense, and carriers recently tried to push ticket prices higher to help offset the oil surge and stay profitable.<br /> [in <a href=http://www.newsisfree.com/sources/info/17960/><b>Lexington Herald-Leader: Business</b></a>]

Memo Pad 20080325191708
PREMIUM AIR TRAVEL SAGS Premium traffic, which had been increasing robustly around the world in recent years, “is now slowing sharply,” said the International Air Transport Association, noting that the number of passengers traveling globally in first- and business-class seats “barely grew” in January compared with January 2007. Premium traffic on the lucrative trans-Atlantic routes grew 5.6 percent in 2007, and was 2.6 percent higher in January compared with January 2007. But that represented slowing compared with December, when trans-Atlantic premium traffic rose 5.7 percent over December 2006. Premium traffic to and from the Middle East continued to grow unabated, with a 20.6 percent increase last year, the international airline trade group said. Continental Airlines has announced a sharp reduction in 60-day advance-purchase business-class fares to Europe for the summer. Here’s a sample round-trip fare: Newark-London Heathrow, $1,798 plus taxes and fees.
